{"id":4117,"date":"2015-11-20T08:57:46","date_gmt":"2015-11-20T14:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/?p=4117"},"modified":"2023-07-20T21:00:01","modified_gmt":"2023-07-20T21:00:01","slug":"the-other-lund-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jodystaples.com\/main\/the-other-lund-theater\/","title":{"rendered":"The Other Lund Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you have trouble falling asleep at night?<br \/>\nI have the answer; my dad\u2019s home movies of Yellowstone National Park.<br \/>\nTrouble is, I haven\u2019t figured out\u00a0how to market them to all you insomniacs out there yet.<\/p>\n<p>We made that family trip to Yellowstone in the summer of 1953, I believe.<br \/>\nI just remember being car-sick most of the time from riding in the backseat sandwiched between my two brothers.\u00a0It was especially bad when we arrived in geyser country.<a href=\"http:\/\/kelolandblogs.com\/lundatlarge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Yellowstone-sign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4119 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2015\/11\/Yellowstone-sign.jpg\" alt=\"Yellowstone sign\" width=\"598\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNow, there\u2019s a place where the devil has provided people with \u00a0a little preview of what Hell will be like; hot gases boiling up from the bowels of the earth causing water to shoot high into the sky or just ooze to the surface creating little burps of slimy mud\u2026 like a thick spaghetti sauce bubbling on the stove.<br \/>\nThe whole place stinks of Beelzebub too..a sulfuric stench not unlike rotten eggs.<br \/>\nOne of Yellowstone\u2019s million or so mud pots..peww<a href=\"http:\/\/kelolandblogs.com\/lundatlarge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/yellowstone-steam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4120 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2015\/11\/yellowstone-steam.jpg\" alt=\"yellowstone steam\" width=\"596\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIt didn\u2019t seem to bother anyone else in the family but me. \u00a0So, while they explored this steaming wonderland on foot, I stayed in our \u201953 Mercury..miserable\u00a0from a combination of heat, car sickness and that awful odor.<br \/>\nI remember being afraid to cough or sneeze for fear that I would erupt like Old Faithful from both ends.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4121\" style=\"width: 607px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kelolandblogs.com\/lundatlarge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/yellowstone-old-faithful.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4121\" class=\"wp-image-4121 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2015\/11\/yellowstone-old-faithful.jpg\" alt=\"Waiting for Old Faithful to erupt.\" width=\"597\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Waiting for Old Faithful to erupt.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Anyway, that\u2019s my memory of Yellowstone National Park.<br \/>\nBut my Dad loved it there and took reel after reel of film..much of it\u00a0while he was driving the car.<br \/>\nFor some reason, he didn\u2019t trust\u00a0my mom or any of us boys with the camera.<br \/>\nSo a lot of the footage is shot through the windshield and shows his left hand gripping the steering wheel with a\u00a0Camel cigarette\u00a0between his fingers.<br \/>\nAfter we got home, it wasn\u2019t long before Dad had the film developed and spliced together on one big brown reel.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4122\" style=\"width: 606px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kelolandblogs.com\/lundatlarge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/lund-family-50s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4122\" class=\"wp-image-4122 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2015\/11\/lund-family-50s.jpg\" alt=\"The Lunds about the time of our Yellowstone journey. (L to R) Me, Mom, Tommy, Denny and Dad.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My Mom was a great cook and she loved to have company come over for supper.<br \/>\nBut those delicious meals usually came at a price; an after-dinner show that we should have called the \u201cWonders of Yellowstone\u201d narrated by Harry Lund.<br \/>\n\u201cYou haven\u2019t seen these have you?\u201d he\u2019d say to our well-fed guests.\u00a0Before anyone could answer, though, the lights were shut off, the projector was switched on and..there we were\u2026back at that hell hole he was so fond of.<\/p>\n<p>But after a few minutes of watching Dad\u2019s long rolling shots of mountain highways, trees and Yellowstone Falls, people\u2019s heads around the living room would begin to bob backward and forward as if Mom had slipped a Mickey into their roast beef.<br \/>\nChildren, including my normally hyperactive cousins, would crumple on the carpet and doze off out of boredom.<\/p>\n<p>It never seemed to bother Dad, though. Showing those home movies always gave him great pleasure even without an attentive audience.<\/p>\n<p>I think of my folks a lot during the month of November. Mom would have been 107 on the 13th, Dad 109 on the 27th. I would give anything to taste her fried chicken again and to sit in our darkened living room listening to the hum of that projector and hear Dad\u2019s voice describing..one more time..the joys and dangers of feeding bears from right out of our car window and the unforgettable aroma of Yellowstone\u2019s geysers.<br \/>\nI would stay awake this time.<a href=\"http:\/\/kelolandblogs.com\/lundatlarge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/yellowstone-bears.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4123 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2015\/11\/yellowstone-bears.png\" alt=\"yellowstone bears\" width=\"520\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you have trouble falling asleep at night?
