But over the past few days, those apprehensions have melted into an affection for trains and an appreciation for the nostalgic experience we\u2019ve just been through.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>It began with the Union Station in Denver. It looks exactly how you\u2019d expect a big city train depot to look from watching those old movies starring Humphry Bogart, Sidney Greenstreet or Loretta Young; tall decorative ceilings, high-back wooden benches for waiting passengers and train dispatchers making arrival and departure announcements that are impossible to understand because of the echo in that huge building.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-676\" title=\"amtrak station\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-station.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak station\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-678\" title=\"amtrak benches\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-benches.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak benches\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-679\" title=\"amtrak in reno\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-in-reno.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak in reno\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Boarding the train we made our way up a tight spiral staircase to the second level through a narrow aluminum hallway and our compartment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-680\" title=\"amtrakk cooridor\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrakk-cooridor.jpg\" alt=\"amtrakk cooridor\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-685\" title=\"amtrak compartment\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-compartment.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak compartment\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Yes, it was tiny compared to the roomy hotels we\u2019ve become accustomed to on these trips but it was very comfortable and the views outside our big private picture window, as we rolled through the Rocky Mountains, were nothing short of spectacular. This view of Linda taking in the amazing sights ain&#8217;t bad either.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-681\" title=\"amtrak linda\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-linda.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak linda\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-682\" title=\"amtrak canyon\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-canyon.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak canyon\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/><\/strong><strong>We were surprised at how quiet and smooth the ride was..very little clickity clacking. I was told that\u2019s because modern rails have fewer splices for the steel wheels to roll over plus the California Zephyr\u2019s suspension is far superior to those trains that first chugged along this route.\u00a0 Even though our train was pretty full, we always found room in the lounge for a cocktail and the observation car for even better panoramas. The waits in the dining car for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner weren\u2019t long at all. The staff was fast and friendly&#8230;the food was fair to middlin&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-686\" title=\"amtrak dining car\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-dining-car.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak dining car\" width=\"588\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>It&#8217;s not the Orient Express..but our Amtrak adventure was great fun and highly recommended. Oh, if you ever do make this trip..I forgot to mention one of the more memorable sights as you journey along the Colorado River. There\u2019s a stretch known as &#8220;Moon&#8221; River where rafters and Kayakers feel compelled to drop their drawers and give everybody on the train a good view of their bare backsides.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-683\" title=\"amtrak mooners\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.keloland.com\/lund\/files\/2010\/09\/amtrak-mooners.jpg\" alt=\"amtrak mooners\" width=\"567\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>When Grouse reads this he\u2019s sure to wonder why I didn\u2019t use a telephoto lens but believe me, from what I could see, you do NOT want a close-up view of these cracked\u00a0 white porcelain posteriors.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Well, we\u2019re off\u00a0 now for a paddleboat ride on beautiful Lake Tahoe then down to San Francisco for a couple days. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As always, wish you were here<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, I admit to having a few reservations about Amtrak before we began this latest Keloland\/Holiday Vacations tour west; I\u2019d heard I might find it\u00a0 boring, cramped, noisy and uncomfortable.
